‘The Flash’ Season 9 Marks the End of CW Series

The end is nigh as CW marked season 9 of The Flash as the superhero’s final sprint. This final outing will be its shortest by quite a few hours as it will run for 13 episodes, making for the shortest season of the series. The news confirmed the speculation that circulated throughout the year about this being the ending when leading star Grant Gustin signed a one-year deal in January.

Production for The Flash season 9 will begin in September with a 2023 release window. Much of the Arrowverse has slowly died off, whether through cancellation or finishing off its story for a proper conclusion. Arrow went for eight seasons, and Supergirl flew for six. After shows like Batwoman have been axed, the only surviving shows are Superman & Lois and Stargirl. Gotham Knights, not to be confused with the upcoming video game of the same name, will premiere in December.

13 episodes of The Flash season 9 marks the shortest season by a long shot. The first four seasons ran for 23 episodes, with its fifth outing going for 22. Things got shorter as its sixth marathon ran for 19 episodes, followed by 18 for its seventh. The previous season got an extra breath as it went for 20 episodes.

Gustin played Barry Allen. Across his leading role and appearances in other shows in the universe like Supergirl and Arrow, he had pushed himself to about 200 episodes as the iconic DC character. As it has taken up most of his career, the only notable role outside of being a superhero was a stint in Glee. He was joined by costars Candice Patton (The Game), Danielle Panabaker (Justified), Carlos Valdes (Gaslit), Tom Cavanagh (Scrubs), and Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order).

As DC and CW’s gears shift, season 9 of The Flash puts into question the future of both the DCEU and Arrowverse. With the movie The Flash reorienting everything, it could lead to answers to where DC heroes are heading for the future.
